*リーズ城　Leeds Castle [#r287e36e]
-イングランド南東のケント州にあり、ロンドンから日帰りも可能。~
-イングランドの城館の中で最も古い城のうちのひとつ。500エーカーの広大な敷地の中の小さな湖畔に端正な姿を見せる。~
-起源は９世紀だが、13世紀になりエドワード１世が所有して以来、王宮としての歴史を重ねている。~
ヘンリー８世が要塞から居城へと変身させた。~
-イングランドの6人の王妃が住んだことから「貴婦人の館」とも呼ばれている。~
-レン川が流れる森林庭園、静かなパビリオン庭園、コテージ・スタイルのカルペパー庭園などいずれも季節の花が咲き乱れる。~
-また1999年にオープンしたレディー・バリー庭園は、バナナやパームツリーなどがあるエキゾティックな雰囲気。城の裏手には、100種以上の鳥を飼う鳥舎とともに植木で作られた迷路もある。~
-４月のグリーンハウス・ウィークエンド、初夏のオープン・エアー・コンサート、夏に開催されるフラワー・アート・フェスティバル、９月の気球大会などイベントも行われる。 ~
-庭園めぐりをするなら、リーズ城のほかにも20世紀の傑作といわれるシシングハースト・ガーデン Sissinghurst Castle Garden がある。廃墟となっていたエリザベス朝時代の城館を買いあげ、30年の時間をかけて名園を作り上げたもので、イギリスで一番美しい庭と賞賛されている。TA~
