-イングランド南部、イッチン川沿いにある町。~
-9世紀前半、7つの王国が割拠していたブリテン島をウェセックス王のエグバートが統一した。~
-ウインチェスターはウェセックスの主要都市であり、王国の事実上の首都となった。~
アルフレッド大王は町を都市計画のもとに整備し、外敵に対する防御を固めた。~
-1141年に大火に見舞われると町は衰退の途をたどったが、14世紀半ばにウィンチェスター司教ウィリアム・ワイカムが町の復興に尽力した。彼は名門パブリックスクール、ウインチェスター校を創立した人物としても知られている。~
-ウインチェスター大聖堂は7世紀創建の古い歴史を持ち、11世紀後半から15世紀初めかけて再建され、現在の姿となった。奥行きが約170ｍもあり、中世寺院ではヨーロッパで最も長い身廊を誇る。~
-この町は、『高慢と偏見』などを著した小説家ジェーン・オースティンが療養のために晩年を過ごし、亡くなったところでもある。kbt~
