*ダラム　Durham [#w301dc90]
-イングランド北部、ニューキャッスルから南へ約20km。ウィアー川が急に進路を変える地点にある町。~
-9世紀にバイキングの襲撃を受けた北海に浮かぶ聖地リンデスファーン島の僧侶たちは、島から逃れて7世紀の聖人カスバートの遺骸とともに旅を続けていた。そして995年、この町を安住の地に定めた。~
-折り返した川の流れに挟まれた場所に、1093年から大聖堂の建設が始まった。12世紀に完成したこのダラム大聖堂は多くの巡礼者が訪れ、町は繁栄した。~
-歴史ある建造物は、『ハリーポッター』の映画でもロケ地として使われ、魔術学校として登場する。~
大聖堂の向かいにあるダラム城は11世紀の建造で、司教が居住していた。~
1837年にダラム大学に寄贈され、学生寮となり、現在も学生が住んでいる。~
